Apple Pay and Google Pay Abroad: A Card for Your Trip

Paying with your phone is the easiest way to travel without a wad of cash. Here is how to set up a virtual card for a trip, add it to Wallet and avoid surprises at the checkout.

In many countries, paying with a phone is simply how things work now: at a café, on the metro, in a taxi or at a chain store, people tap an iPhone or Android phone instead of a card. For travelers it is also safer — no plastic to pull out, and the merchant never sees your card details. If you don't have a foreign card, a virtual one can do the job: issue it online, top it up and add it to your phone's wallet before you fly.

Below is a step-by-step guide, an honest look at where tap-to-pay works and where it may not, and a checklist worth running through a couple of days before your trip.

Why a virtual card works for travel

Orris Universal is a virtual Visa Signature card issued in Singapore (a Singapore BIN) with a US dollar account. It supports Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus 3‑D Secure for online purchases. It is valid for 3 years with a monthly limit of $50,000. There is no plastic: the card details appear in your dashboard, and you use them to add the card to Wallet.

  • Issue fee: 1,990 ₽ one-time, no monthly fee. The card costs nothing while you are not using it.
  • Successful payment: $0.50; payments in a currency other than USD carry a 3% conversion fee. Abroad, almost everything will be in the local currency, so factor that into your budget.
  • You can issue several cards — for example, a separate one for the trip so it doesn't mix with your subscriptions.
  • Freeze in one click: if your phone goes missing, freeze the card in the dashboard and new payments will be declined.

A Singapore-BIN card is meant for paying abroad and for foreign online services. Inside Russia, in-store payments with a foreign-issued Visa generally won't go through — use a Russian bank card for purchases at home.

How to issue the card and get it ready

  1. Sign up with email or Telegram — it takes a minute.
  2. Top up your balance with USDT on TRC-20, TON or ERC-20. The top-up fee is 4%, at 1 USDT = $1. Top-ups via SBP and Russian bank cards are coming soon; for now, crypto is the only option.
  3. Pay the issue fee from your balance — 1,990 ₽. Card details usually appear in the dashboard within seconds.
  4. Move money onto the card — transfers from the balance to the card are free, 0%.
  5. Add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay using the details from the dashboard — see below.

One important detail: card transaction fees — for successful payments, conversion and declined payments — are charged to the funds on the card itself. Keep a small buffer on the card on top of what you plan to spend. If the card holds exactly the price of dinner, the payment may fail because there is nothing left for the fee.

How to add the card to Apple Pay manually

You add a virtual card to Apple Wallet just like a regular one — you simply type the details instead of scanning them with the camera.

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap «+».
  2. Choose «Debit or Credit Card», then enter the details manually.
  3. Copy the card number, cardholder name, expiry date and CVV from your Orris dashboard into the matching fields.
  4. Accept the terms and wait for verification. If Wallet asks for extra confirmation, follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Once added, you can also put the card on your Apple Watch via the Watch app.

If the card won't add, check that there are no typos, the card isn't frozen and iOS is up to date. Apple Pay has not officially worked in Russia since 2022, and Wallet features depend on the device, its region and settings, so if the on-screen prompts don't help, contact Orris support and we'll sort it out together.

How to add the card to Google Pay

On Android, tap-to-pay runs through the Google Wallet app and requires NFC. The steps are similar: open Wallet, tap «Add to Wallet» → «Payment card» and enter the details manually. If the app offers to verify the card, choose an available option. Set up a screen lock — Google Wallet won't allow contactless payments without one.

Keep in mind that Google Pay has been suspended in Russia since 2022, and Google apps and services are not available everywhere in the same way. Make sure Wallet is installed and opens on your phone while you are still at home, not at the airport checkout.

Where tap-to-pay works abroad

Contactless Visa payments by phone work wherever contactless Visa cards are accepted. In Europe, the US, the UK, Turkey, the UAE and Southeast Asia such terminals are common, but it always depends on the specific merchant.

Shops, cafés and restaurants

Chain stores, supermarkets and most cafés in big cities have contactless terminals. Small family-run places, markets and tourist spots off the beaten track often take cash only. In restaurants, staff sometimes bring a portable terminal to the table — you can tap your phone there too.

Public transport

In many cities — London, New York, Singapore and a number of European capitals, for example — you can pay for the metro or bus by tapping your phone or a contactless card at the gate or validator. Some ticket types still can't be bought this way, and some systems still rely on their own passes. Check the city transport website before you go: it usually says plainly whether contactless bank cards are accepted.

Taxis and car sharing

In ride-hailing apps such as Uber or local equivalents, you add the card to your profile with its details, like any online service, sometimes with a 3‑D Secure check. Apps often place a small verification hold that is released later. The service decides whether to accept a card, and there is no way to predict it in advance.

Hotels and car rental

Hotels and rental companies often place a deposit hold on the card. The amount is frozen temporarily and released after check-out, but it has to stay on the card meanwhile. Car rental companies also frequently require a physical credit card in the driver's name and may refuse a virtual one. If you plan to rent a car, check the terms with the rental company in advance.

Payment currency: what to choose at the terminal

Orris Universal is a USD card. Payments in euros, lira or baht incur a 3% conversion fee. That applies in Singapore too: the card is issued there, but purchases in Singapore dollars still go through conversion. Sometimes a terminal or waiter offers to charge you «in your card's currency» — this is dynamic currency conversion (DCC), and the rate is set by the merchant or its bank. It is often unfavorable. If in doubt, compare the amount on screen with the market rate; in many cases paying in the local currency is the fairer option.

Pre-trip checklist

  • Issue the card and add it to Wallet in advance, not at the airport checkout.
  • Make a small test payment online — a subscription or a purchase from a foreign store — to make sure everything works.
  • Work out your budget and move money onto the card with a buffer for fees, conversion and hotel deposits.
  • Check that your trip spending fits within the monthly limit of $50,000.
  • Make sure you can log in to your Orris dashboard from your phone: that is where you top up or freeze the card on the road.
  • Bring some cash for places that accept nothing else.
  • Save the Orris support contact and turn on a screen lock on your phone.

What to do if a payment fails

Don't tap your phone five times in a row. First, check the card balance in the dashboard: is there enough for the purchase plus the fee? If there is, try a smaller amount or pay elsewhere — some terminals simply don't accept certain cards. A declined payment costs $0.60, and a series of failed attempts can trigger a fraud filter. FAQ

Can I tap to pay with an Orris card in Russia?

Generally no: a foreign-issued Visa, including a Singapore one, usually won't go through in Russian stores. The card is meant for paying abroad and for foreign online services.

How much does paying by phone abroad cost?

There is no separate charge for Apple Pay or Google Pay. The usual card fees apply: $0.50 per successful payment and 3% for conversion if the payment isn't in USD. See all pricing.

Do I need a plastic card to add it to Wallet?

No. The Orris card is virtual: the details are in your dashboard, and you enter them into Wallet manually.

What if I lose my phone?

Log in to your Orris dashboard from another device and freeze the card — new payments will be declined. Freezing doesn't cancel existing subscriptions: cancel those with the service itself.

Can I get the remaining money back after the trip?

You can keep the money on the card for your next trip or subscriptions — there is no monthly fee. If you close the card, the remainder returns to your Orris balance minus $5, but not less than 3% of the remainder. The money goes back to your Orris balance, not to a bank card.

Bottom line

A virtual Visa in Apple Pay or Google Pay covers most everyday travel spending: shops, cafés, transport and taxis. Set the card up in advance, keep a buffer for fees and deposits, and bring a little cash for cash-only places. And if you also pay for foreign services, the same card works for things like ChatGPT Plus or Netflix and Spotify.
